505. Sunday 14th August 2016. Botanical Gardens and Rugby League…

Saturday 13th August

We have always wanted to visit the Gold Coast Botanical Gardens at Benowa. The gardens are only a recent development. When I say “recent” I mean in the last 20 years. The gardens are still under development.  A good deal of work has gone into the lakes, bridges and islands.

A stand of Bamboo. This is something I would never plant in a home garden except in a strong pot.

Walkways around the lakes are well done. Walks have been created, meandering through mostly Tropical and Sub Tropical Native Plants. I was disappointed to see few signs but the garden management acknowledge they are still in the building stages. Today was an event called Discovery in the Gardens and included lots of interesting people, plants and animals. Our friend Glenda joined us. There were several interesting exhibits which caught our eyes. The local Beekeepers, The Bat Clinic,

There was a bat display with about a dozen young being fed via tiny bottles. This young teenager was more active than you expect for a nocturnal creature.

Lizards and Stick Insects, Worm Farms, Water Engineering with products found around the house and a specialist talking about healthy soils.

Of course there were many more but those are the ones which caught our attention. A mobile wood fired pizza oven was a worthwhile visit.

The other team leapt ahead on the scoreboard until Chris scored the first try for his team. At halftime his team was behind16 -6 and they had a lot of catching up to do.

With 11 minutes left in the game the score was 22 -12 and I thought they were out of the game. Suddenly two quick tries and the score was level 22 all and with a minute left on the clock.

The penultimate try. Chris is shouting yahoo.

Chris’s team, the Springwood Tigers Junior Rugby League Football Club, stepped up the pace and kicked ahead and regathered and passed the ball to Chris who scored the winning try which was converted. Final score 28 – 22.

There was a very jubilant team of 15 boys and a dejected team of 15 boys.

The game was entertaining and Chris, rightfully, received a Man of the Match award.
